"Have you ever been so sick or injured that you had to be hospitalized? Well, if you have, you know that because of insurance constraints and a shortage of beds, the hospitals do not keep you there until you are 100% better. They send you home feeling pretty lousy, sore and weak. They give your family instructions on how to help you complete your recovery. If you have really great health insurance, you might even be able to have a nurse or therapist come to your home to help.
That’s actually a problem that happens pretty frequently. Even worse, imagine if you didn’t have a home to go to at all. Imagine being discharged from the hospital to the streets or the woods or even a shelter. How would you get the rest you need or the nourishment to get better? How in the world would you ever get well and get back on your feet? Well, chances are great that you would never reach full recovery. You might find yourself back in the hospital, maybe even sicker than before. Well, this, too, happens every day, all over the nation. What happens then? Where do these people get the help they need? Up until now, there hasn’t been a place to go when these folks are ready to be discharged from the hospital. Here in Central Florida, we have come up with a solution to this problem.".......Fr. John Bluett, from his homily of June 1, 2003.
PATHWAYS TO CARE is a 40-bed, not-for-profit respite center dedicated to providing health, housing, and hope to Central Florida's homeless. Our mission is to provide short-term recuperative care and support services for homeless adults in need of temporary housing and support services in order to recover from an acute medical illness or injury. Opened on July 1, 2003 as a licensed assisted living facility, Pathways to Care's overall goal is to support our residents to achieve greater health, self-sufficiency and housing stability. Clients are urged to develop and complete a social recovery plan devised to solve the root causes of their illness, homelessness, and joblessness. As such, PTC goals are far-reaching on an individual as well as a community level.
